Thousands Pay Tribute to Late Hajjat Nusula Nabukalu in Jinja

Sheikh Shaban Mubaje leading prayers to honour late Nabukalu

Jinja – A sea of mourners gathered at Bugembe Blue Primary School in Jinja to honor the life and legacy of Hajjat Nusula Nabukalu, the former Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Budaka, who tragically lost her life in a road accident on the Jinja-Iganga Highway on Sunday.

The solemn occasion brought together high-ranking government officials, Members of Parliament, and members of the Muslim community, led by Uganda's Mufti, Sheikh Shaban Mubaje.

Tributes to a Selfless Leader
Minister for the Presidency Milly Babirye Babalanda represented the government and led tributes to Nabukalu, celebrating her as a selfless public servant, a committed member of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), and a paragon of integrity in public service.

“Nusula has left an unblemished record. She fulfilled every task assigned to her without requesting additional resources or facilitation. Her dedication and work ethic are rare in today’s society. She worked tirelessly for the people without expecting anything in return,” Minister Babalanda said.

The minister also praised Nabukalu for her efforts in combating the divisive “Pull Him/Her Down” culture that has hindered development in the Busoga region. “She fought against negative forces that hold Busoga back. We must honor her memory by supporting our leaders and promoting unity,” Babalanda urged.

A Family's Appeal for Legacy Continuation
On behalf of the family, Hajj Issa Shaban made an appeal to President Yoweri Museveni to consider appointing a family member to succeed Nabukalu in leadership, emphasizing that many of them are highly educated and qualified to continue her legacy.

Call for Government Action
Mufti Sheikh Shaban Mubaje took the opportunity to remind the government of an unfulfilled pledge to allocate 10 acres of land for a new Jinja Muslim Cemetery. He called for expedited action on the matter, referencing Lands Minister Judith Nabakooba’s previous commitment to resolve a land dispute involving the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council and Jinja Regional Referral Hospital.

Dignitaries and Delegations
The ceremony drew delegations from Sironko District, where Nabukalu served as Deputy RDC from 2021 to 2024, and Budaka District, her most recent posting. Notable attendees included NRM Central Executive Committee representative Lydia Wanyoto, Budaka LCV Chairman Paje Emmanuel, RDCs, Members of Parliament, and religious leaders.

A Legacy of Integrity
Hajjat Nusula Nabukalu was laid to rest at Jinja Muslim Cemetery, leaving behind a legacy marked by integrity, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to public service.

Her passing has created a significant void in the public sector. However, her exemplary contributions and steadfast principles will continue to inspire future generations.
