Time to act on mental health

Health of the mind

Mental health is a serious issue that affects more than 1 in 6 people in the European Union (EU). It costs over 600 billion euros every year. The current way the EU deals with mental health, treating it like a chronic disease, is not enough.

The MEP Alliance for Mental Health is calling on the European Commission to create a complete EU Mental Health Strategy. The COVID-19 pandemic made mental health problems worse, showing that we need to act quickly.

This new strategy should focus on prevention, promotion, treatment, and care. It should involve different areas of policy. Although the Commission has limited power over mental health, it can still include mental health in broader policies and provide financial support for important projects.

Raising awareness and reducing stigma around mental health is essential. One idea is to have a European Year for Good Mental Health. It is also important to support data collection, research, and sharing of best practices.

The strategy should encourage countries to create action programs for mental health, similar to those for rare diseases and cancer. Prioritizing mental health will not only improve individual well-being but also benefit the labor market, social cohesion, and economic growth.
